|
|
Kit #296893 has matched the "PAXTANG PA" ELDER DNA group.
Now we need to find his branch origins, from Scotland through Ireland?
Could be families who match from Inch Island, Co Donegal, or from Ballymoney, County Antrim.
His earliest known ancestor is Rev War Soldier, Joseph ELDER d. 1829 in Orange Co NY.

Today I'm using GOOGLE to search for: "Elder family" in HANOVER, Pennsylvania"
Found a mention by "ANN"
for "ROBERT ELDER (b. 1704) m. TAYLOR -- in Donna Logan's "sharing discussion" archives
at
http://www.familytrail.com/elder/sharing/mail_listaug98.html
SUBJ: ELDER, Robert-- "The following was sent to me by my sister in PA some years
ago. Chester County Historical Society. A lady had written Mr. John V.
Hollingsworth, College of American Genealogist; dated Sept. 7, 1978. "Dear
Sir: Your name was given to me by Willard Heiss as one I might find about
my TAYLOR ancestry. Mary TAYLOR married Robert ELDER 1762 his second wife.
He was a resident of Hanover Township, Lancaster Co., PA.
and after his
first wives death left and I do not know if he was married while away
or on
his return to Lancaster Co., PA. I was always told she was a Quaker.
This is not much to go on. After their marriage they moved to the West
establishing "ELDERS RIDGE, PA. Mary TAYLOR died 1813 at Elders Ridge and is buried in Ebenezer Cemetery at Lewisville, PA. etc." Ann

ELDER has 10 entries, looks mostly for "Rev. JOHN ELDER" -- who preached there.
I'll read entries more carefully.
Probably should read the whole book!

Now I'm reading the whole book "Historical Sketch of Old Hanover Church"
using the .pdf file downloaded from Archive.org.
Using Search file, Houston or Huston, I found one entry below on Page 15.
Note for Page 14.
Footnote:
"The members of Old Hanover Congregation as early as 1750,
less than twenty years after its founding,
may be gathered from the list of taxables in Rupp's History of Dauphin County, p. 206."
Note for Page 15 - "At this period, from 1756 * to 1764, the
entire region was greatly harrassed by Indian wars."
Includes list of names titled
*Hanover Ass'ts for the King's Use, 1759.
No ELDER surname listed,
but did find
HUSTON, ROBERT - 2 shillings 6 d.
Rev. John ELDER is mentioned:
Page 17. "In the year 1760 Rev. Messrs. Elder, Duffield, Roan and and Williams
occasionally preached for them."...
"During the year 1761 Hanover was supplied mainly by
Rev. Messrs. Roan, Tate, Elder, Beard and M'Mordie.
"In 1762, in November, a call was made for the Rev. Robert M. Mordie,
which he accepted. The congregation promised him eighty pounds for
his temporal support, to be secured by bonds.
Rev. Messrs. John Elder and Joseph Tate were appointed to
install him on the fourth Sunday of November, 1762, Mr. Elder to preside."
Page 39 - 42. Hanover Church Burial Record
No ELDER and No HOUSTON/HUSTON
Another note from preface:
"Visiting the place a few months ago, the writer found only scattered remnants of the ancient stone structure, and close by the walled grave-yard where the "Fathers of ye olden time" are sleeping.
A fund for the repairing of the grave-yard, obtained by the sale of the church building and from other sources, is in the hands of a body of trustees.....
"Two or three of the old families are still represented in the homes of the region, but the well-filled grave-yard, where many an unmarked mound, many a well-worn, moss-covered stone, with the better-preserved memorial of later times, may be seen, shows how large a Presbyterian ancestry once occupied this region."
