Rachel, daughter of Charles McKinnis Jr. and Martha Cramer, was born in Pennsylvania, likely in or near Allegheny County. The family migrated down the Ohio River settling first in Ross County, Ohio when Rachel was a little girl. They settled there because of the presence of a fort, but were plagued by malaria and the ague. They moved to neighboring Jackson County to avail themselves of the sulphur springs, but this move opened them to the worry of the Indians in the immediate area. They moved back to the safety of the fort in Ross County, but returned to Jackson County for good by 1820.

It was in Jackson County she met and married Robert Elder, Jr., son of Robert Elder, Sr. and Mary A. Dempsey. Robert and Rachel and family moved to Wapello County, Iowa by 1856. Rachel died in 1867 in Davis County, Iowa, and Robert moved with their son Lineas and his family to Greene County, Missouri. His death and burial location is unknown at this time.
