For those of you researching the family of Thomas Elder and Elizabeth Hoffman, here is some info on their eldest son, George E. Elder, born in Ohio in 1829:

George probably came to Lansing Twp., Ingham Co., MI with his father in 1852. He married Mary Wilson in Ingham County on 27 October 1853 where he was listed as 24 years of age.

26 Oct 1854, Emma L. Elder was born to Mary Wilson and George E. Elder. Present at the birth was Matilda Elder (George's step-mother).

5 Oct 1856 Caroline Almina Elder was born to Mary Wilson and George E. Elder. Present at the birth was Matilda Elder (George's step-mother) and Loretta Buck (mother-in-law of George's brother, James C. Elder).

George enlisted in the Union Army on 23 Sep 1861 in Jackson, MI.

George mustered out of the Union Army on 26 Oct 1862 at Pleasant Valley, MD.

George re-enlisted on 12 Dec 1863 in Tompkins Twp., Jackson Co., MI. He was in Company G, 4th Cavalry Regiment Michigan.

George "was taken sick at or near Chattanooga with congestion of the lungs while in the service of the United States and in the line of his duty. That said Elder was removed from Chattanooga to Hospital at Nashville, TN and died at said Hospital on or about 30 Oct 1864". Per Capt. Van Antwerp of the 4th Michigan Cavalry, 11 Jan 1866.

George died of Typhoid Fever on 30 Oct 1864 at Camp Webster in Nashville, TN per Surgeon General's Office report to the Record and Pension Bureau dated 5 Dec 1865.

George is buried in the Nashville National Cemetery Section G, Grave No. 8220.

George was my 3xgreat-grandfather
