Carl M. Elder of Old Mercer Road, Wilmington Township, Lawrence County (New Castle), died at 10:30 a.m. Monday (5-5-14) at his farm. He was 96. Mr. Elder was born Sept. 23, 1917, in Wilmington Township to James R. and Gertrude Redmond Elder. Carl graduated from Wilmington High School and was a self-employed dairy farmer his entire life. Mr. Elder served his country in World War II in the Army Air Corps in the European theater. He was a lifelong member of Volant United Methodist Church and was active in the community all of his life. He formerly served the Lawrence County Agricultural Stabilization and Conservation Service as chairman and was a committeeman to the Farmers Home Administration. As a Free and Accepted Mason, Carl was a 50-year member of Wilmington Lodge 804 and Scottish Rite’s New Castle Consistory. He was a member of the New Castle Horseshoe Club. He enjoyed his friends and had a wonderful sense of humor. Most important to him was his family. His wife, the former Emily Lou Weir, whom he married May 22, 1946, preceded him in death in May 2003. Survivors include: three sons, David Elder and his wife Beverly, New Castle; Dale Elder and his wife Cathy, Volant; and Grant Elder and his wife Judy, New Wilmington; eight grandchildren, Loren and Darren Elder, Mary Elder Garrett, Emily Elder Mortimer, Sarah Elder Zets; and Heather, Laura and Julie Elder; and four great-grandchildren, Cora and Miles Garrett, James Elder and Tristan Mortimer. There are also several nieces and nephews to complete the family. Besides his wife, Carl was preceded in death by his parents; a sister, Grace Elder Leonhardt; and a brother, Donald R. Elder. Memorial contributions may be made to Volant United Methodist Church, Box 86, Volant, PA 16156. ELDER Carl M., 96, Old Mercer Road, Wilmington Township, Lawrence County. Calling hours: Friends will be received from 4 to 8 p.m. today (5-7-14) in SMITH FUNERAL HOME, 310 W. Neshannock Ave., New Wilmington, with Masonic rites following visitation. Service: Funeral service at 11 a.m. Thursday (5-8-14) in the funeral home with the Rev. Gary Hilton, pastor of Volant United Methodist Church, officiating. Interment: Castle View Memorial Gardens, New Castle.
