Searching for:
"Walking Tree Press, Pleasant Hill, Oregon, 1997"
found a story of the Mercator atlas:

RE: JOHN ELDER in 1500's:
....
"How astonished and dismayed the devout Protestant Mercator would have been to learn that the 1564 wall map of the British Isles that he included in his atlas - the first detailed and accurate geographical
picture of those islands - was a tool of invasion! The original maps were apparently drawn by the Scottish cartographer John Elder, a tutor to Mary Queen of Scot's husband [Darnley] and a staunch Catholic who longed to
aid in the overthrow of the Protestant Queen Elizabeth I.
Elder visited the continent in the 1550s and later supplied the well-known Mercator with his maps, in the hopes of aiding a Catholic invasion force. He invited Mercator to publish the maps under the Mercator name, which the latter did in 1564. Dr. Barber says, "What we have here is not a true map of Elizabethan England, but a map of how Elder saw a Catholic England under Mary Tudor."

More about JOHN ELDER:
http://www.walkingtree.com/excerptbarber.html
MAPPING BRITAIN FROM AFAR Chapter Excerpt by Peter M. Barber
The following was excerpted from Peter M. Barber's chapter, "The British Isles," in the July/August 1998 issue of Mercator's WorldŽ magazine.
Mercator credits a "friend" with creating his 1564 map of the British Isles. Who was this mysterious mapmaker?

In France he presented Mary, Queen of Scots, with an autograph letter and (in a display of indirect vanity?) a fanciful map of the New Utopia ostensibly by his eight-year-old pupil,Lord Darnley. This formed part of the manoeuvres of Darnley's mother, the ambitious countess of
Lennox, at reconciliation with Mary-manoeuvres that, given the countess's English nationality, soon
bordered on treason, and with which Elder was deeply involved..."

Using Google.com, searching for "JOHN ELDER" cartographer,
found:
http://www.caithness.org/history/articles/sailingdirections.htm
Sailing Directions For The North Coast
by George Watson

..." Now Alexander Lindsay was probably a lowland Scot who acquired his
information about the north and west coasts from some local expert. The most likely candidate
was John Elder, who was born in Caithness and was brought up In Skye and Lewis. In 1543 Elder
sent a letter and a 'plotte' or map of Scotland to King Henry VIII. As a cartographer he is
likely to have had the type of information which Lindsay needed."
