This subject had it’s origins in a mistake made in the 1840 census.

Michael Crippen was identified as being of the branch of Crippen’s who immigrated to the United States in the 1830’s from England. Well, that’s not correct.

I’ve had to revisit several times, the England born Henry & Elizabeth Crippen of the early to mid 1800’s and consistently lose my research. This is an effort, once and for all, never to misplace the research on Henry and Elizabeth.

In addition, there have been a few queries and responses on the bulletin boards regarding origins of Crippens from Countries other than England. So why not combine Henry and the rest of the non-USA born Crippens, thus saving someone the research effort. The identification of these non-USA born Crippens was based on a generic search. To identify the Country of Birth, one had to remember all the Countries which existed in the 1800’s. Since the 1870’s World Atlas, was not put back in it’s correct place, the search was done on the Countries of memory. Now, anyone with German origins, could present a problem. Many people of German orgin did not identify “ the Country”, but rather used one of the States or Localities such as Saxony, Baden, Wurttemberg or Lippe Deitmold. This rather “short circuits” retrieving everyone, unless you are a student of European history.

It must be stated there is a some kind of error ratio of sorts in the Birth Place field of indexed census records. The last I knew of American history, Montana was not a State in 1797. Yet, Almon Crippen of Ballston, Saratoga Co., New York is listed with an estimated Birth Year of 1797, Birth Place = Montana! So you see, one cannot always rely on what appears in the online index records.

Massachusetts Vital Records to 1850 contains the following information on a Henry and Elizabeth Crippen of Grafton, Massachusetts.

Note: Barbados is really what is on the image. It appears the family prior to Schuyler’s census record were all born in Barbados. The census enumerator seems to have been over zealous with the ditto marks.....or Schuyler had a tremendous sense of humour. Schuyler and his entire family ended up as being born in Barbados. By the way his occupation is lawyer.
